Business Licence Overview
Any person owning or operating a business within the Village of Salmo must obtain an annual Business License. This applies to all retail and commercial establishments, management and professional firms, home-based businesses, short or long-term rental accommodations, etc. Business Licenses are issued annually and are due on or before February 1st of each year with a 10% penalty for late payments.
Changes to Your Licence
Business owners are required to notify the Village of Salmo of any changes to their business licence by contacting the Village office in writing.
The issuance of a business licence is dependent on being in compliance with Village bylaws as well as local, provincial and federal regulations as applicable. The Zoning Bylaw regulates which business activities are permitted in each zone as well as home-based businesses.
Inter-Community Business Licence (ICBL)
The Village of Salmo is participating in the West Kootenay Inter-Community Business Licence Program, which covers 6 municipalities – City of Nelson, Town of Creston, City of Castlegar, City of Rossland and the Village of Kaslo. ICBL allows mobile businesses to operate in multiple municipalities, under one licence, rather than obtaining non-residence licences from each municipality.
October 2018 – Currently Amendment Bylaw 698 to Zoning Bylaw 489 prohibits cannabis-related businesses in the Village of Salmo. This zoning regulation is expected to change allowing the retail sale once the Official Community Plan (OCP) and a new zoning bylaw are completed.
