Business Licence Overview
Any person owning or operating a business within the Village of Salmo must obtain an annual Business License. This applies to all retail and commercial establishments, management and professional firms, home-based businesses, short or long-term rental accommodations, etc. Business Licenses are issued annually and are due on or before February 1st of each year with a 10% penalty for late payments.
Changes to Your Licence
Business owners are required to notify the Village of Salmo of any changes to their business licence by contacting the Village office in writing.
The issuance of a business licence is dependent on being in compliance with Village bylaws as well as local, provincial and federal regulations as applicable. The Zoning Bylaw regulates which business activities are permitted in each zone as well as home-based businesses.
Inter-Community Business Licence (ICBL)
The Village of Salmo is participating in the Kootenay Intercommunity Business License Program which now covers 10 Kootenay municipalities – the City of Castlegar, Town of Creston, City of Grand Forks, Village of Kaslo, City of Nelson, Village of New Denver, City of Rossland, Village of Salmo, Village of Silverton, and the Village of Slocan. The fee is $100 in addition to your Village of Salmo Business license.
An ICBL allows mobile businesses to operate in multiple municipalities, under one licence, rather than obtaining non-residence licences from each municipality. For more information on the program and other areas visit the Ministry of Jobs, Trade and Technology.
