Stephen grew up in the Ottawa Valley, moving to the Salmo area in the 1970s.  As a young man he worked in the forest, healthcare industries and the public service.  Eventually he returned to Ottawa having been elected National President of a federal public service union.  Having worked across Canada as the head of a National Union he was responsible for multi million dollar budgets and quickly learned to interpret and apply statutes and lobby and make presentations to groups from members of the public to Federal Parliamentary Committees.  Always wanting to return home to the Kootenays the opportunity finally came with retirement.  Always a believer in giving back to your community Stephen immediately volunteered for the Salmo Board of Variance.  In 2014 he was elected Mayor of Salmo and subsequently Salmo Director for the Regional District of Central Kootenay.
