At the Regular Council Meeting (#05-16) of March 8th, 2016, the Village of Salmo Council passed the “Salmo Valley Volunteer Long Service Award Policy” . The Village of Salmo recognizes that volunteerism is a vital part of the fabric of our community and wishes to honour the dedication and contribution of our long serving community volunteers. The objective of this policy is to celebrate the Village of Salmo’s culture of volunteerism and honour long serving community volunteers.

Doris has spent countless hours volunteering in the community for a variety of organizations. Among other things, she was a Girl Guide leader for over 40 years, a Trifoil Guild Administrator for 28 years, a Pythian Sister, and a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society for their daffodil fundraising.
Wayne has volunteered with the Salmo fire Department for over 42 years! He is a valuable resource that the department can always rely on, sharing his knowledge with new recruits, at fire and accident scenes and can always being counted on to show up.
Margaret has volunteered for many Salmo organizations including the Salmo Recreation Commission, the Ladies Curling Club, the Salmo Rink Association and the Salmo Ski Hill and was one of the original directors that incorporated West Kootenay Minor Softball after many years running it without an actual society.
Over the years Melanie’s many accomplishments include, but are not limited to, being Founding Director, President, Treasurer, grant writer and coordinator for the Salmo Valley Youth & Community Centre Society; volunteering with the Salmo Community Literacy committee, Salmo Public Library, Emergency Social Services, Salmo Valley Pool Society, Salmo SS jr. boys basketball, swim team, and the Salmo Child Care Society.
Ian has been actively involved as a volunteer with the Salmo District Golf Course as President, Vice-President or board member since the 1970’s. Coached girls softball and volunteered for many years for the Salmo Curling Rink and Junior Curling, Salmo Ski Hill, Salmo Recreation Commission and Trail Horseman Society.
Ken Andersen was nominated for the many years as a member of the Salmo Volunteer Fire Department. Ken continues to volunteer an honorary member at fundraisers and other events. Ken also has an extensive background in volunteering for many other community groups including the Salmo Lions Club, the Salmo Valley Curling Rink, the Salmo Swimming Pool and Salmo Ski Hill, some of which he continues to volunteer his time to today. His commitment to the community is invaluable and much appreciated.
Guistina has been an active member of the Salmo and District Health Care Auxiliary for over 36 years since 1982! She has put in hundreds of hours of service working in the Thrift Shop every Friday, as well as extra duties twice a year when they have our seasonal change overs has made her someone to be respected and appreciated. Guistina has presided over and donated to the Craft table since the inception of the annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar. She donates her prized baked goods and has been instrumental in making the annual spring plant and bake sale such a success, not only with her baking but she and her husband also donate many of the plants, which they grow especially for the Hospital Auxiliary to sell. Guistina is quiet and unassuming and does whatever she can to make the Auxiliary a better place to be.
Kay was nominated for her extensive contributions to Salmo, specifically her time on the Salmo Community Services board and more recently as the chair on the Salmo Valley Public Library board. She is very well respected in the community and her leadership has helped to make the Salmo Valley Public Library one of the most beloved community resources in the West Kootenays.
Mr. Louis Ponti will be posthumously granted the first award at a celebration of his life in June of 2016. His volunteer contributions spanned 60 years and included his activity with the Lions Club, Swimming Pool, Community Centre, and as a volunteer firefighter and paramedic.
