West Kootenay Nav-CARE: Volunteers Wanted

Nav-CARE (https://westkootenaynavcare.org) is a compassionate community-based program developed to improve the quality of life of adults living with declining health, social isolation or increased frailty by providing social, emotional and practical support. They are seeking volunteer Navigators, who provide companionship and social engagement, support decision-making and offer information on local government services to seniors as well as adults with declining health. Volunteers should be excellent listeners and communicators, warm and empathetic, and have the ability to treat each person as an individual and see their unique gifts. Volunteers must complete a criminal record check, and be able to meet with clients in their home or virtually one hour per week. This opportunity is a fulfilling way to connect with others and make a significant difference in someone’s life.

Cemetery Working Group – Village of Salmo - Group Members Wanted

Village Council has agreed that a Cemetery Working Group be formed to determine if it is feasible to have a Memorial Wall or other type of monument erected at the cemetery and to also look at other ways villagers and area residents can memorialize their loved ones either at the cemetery or possibly in pre-determined locations around town. This could include items such as memorial benches or planting memorial trees with some form of memorial plaque or engraving. (Please Note – This group is not about the basic maintenance and care of the Cemetery.)

This newly formed Group is looking for working members.

If you are interested in helping with the future of the Salmo Cemetery and coming up with ideas for memorializing your ancestors, come and join us. The Working Group will report their recommendations to Council as they are decided.

Friends of the Salmo Public Library - Members Wanted

Friends of the Salmo Public Library are happy to welcome new members anytime. Our mandate is to advocate for and support the Salmo Public Library. We organize fundraising and promotional events, and we are also known to pitch in at Library events that require additional support; anything from baking for events to keeping score during the annual Scrabble Tournament or lending a hand during children’s programs.

There are no prerequisites or special skills to join this dynamic, young-at-heart group with a variety of interests and backgrounds. Some heavy lifting may be required but there is always someone there to lend a hand. We hold monthly meetings, lasting 1 to 1.5 hours, on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30pm at the Salmo Public Library, 106 – 4th Street, except in July and August. Fundraising and promotional events may take up to an additional six to eight hours a month of your time. Whether or not you are new to town or looking for something new to do, this is a great way make (new) friends amongst the Friends. Knowing that with our hard work and dedication, funds raised go toward the enhancement of our Library’s collection, and the purchase of items that our Library might not otherwise be able to provide to its patrons. A small yearly membership fee applies.

Salmo and District Healthcare Auxiliary Society - New Members/Volunteers

The Salmo and District Healthcare Auxiliary Society operates the Thrift Shop. Our aim is to enhance the wellbeing of our community and those in need. Members work at the Thrift Store, and during the twice-yearly change-overs, the Mother’s Day and Christmas sales, and for July 1st festivities. The Thrift Store, is open Wednesday’s and Friday’s year-round from 10am to 2pm, apart from statutory holidays and the twice yearly “change-over”. Volunteers do pre-scheduled shifts as their time permits. A small yearly membership fee applies.

Crafting expertise is most welcome, and baking is a must for the Mother’s Day and Christmas sales. Raffle tickets are a huge fund-raiser, so be prepared to sell, sell, sell. There are no needed prerequisites to join this dynamic and friendly group! Some heavy lifting may be required but there is always someone there to lend a hand. Members attend regular monthly meetings lasting 1 to 1.5 hours on the second Monday of each month at 10am, except July and August.

Whether or not you are new to town or looking for something new to do, this is a great way to meet Salmo residents and make (new) friends amongst the Auxiliary members. Your hard work and dedication help to raise funds that go toward medical and health services in Salmo and area.

Salmo Lions Club - New Members Wanted

The Salmo Chapter of Lions International is looking for new members to join our ranks. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.

Salmo members participate in many activities:

  • Lion’s Railway Garden – clean-up, planting flowers, painting, mowing & tree trimming
  • Outdoor skating rink – flooding, snow removal, & general upkeep
  • Canada Day – cooking & selling burgers & dogs at KP Park, and
  • Participating in numerous service activities in Salmo such as organizing the Terry Fox Run and putting on a pancake breakfast in September, plus holding various fundraisers throughout the year.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a vital community service organization. You will make new friends while giving back to your community. No special skills are required (but any you bring are a bonus!), just a willingness to volunteer and have a good time doing it. Please come and see what we’re all about. We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 6:00 pm at the Pend D’Oreille Restaurant at 103 Motel Avenue.

Salmo Volunteer Fire Department - Volunteer Firefighters

The Salmo Volunteer Fire Department is always pleased to welcome community members interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter. Our mandate is to provide fire protection and vehicle extrication in the Salmo River valley. As a Volunteer firefighter you will gain a strong sense of community, experience working with a variety of tools and equipment, and have the knowledge that you were there to help someone on their worst day. Plus you’ll enjoy the fellowship of a great bunch of men and women.

Firefighters need to have the ability to climb ladders and the ability to get along in a team setting with a very diverse group of individuals. First aid is not required, but is an asset. Duties include basic firefighting, rope rescue, auto extrication and responding to calls of various types as they come in. There is a two-hour training session every Tuesday night at 7:00 pm at the Salmo Firehall – 414 Baker Avenue. Our membership needs are dependent on our current roster size. All new members must complete a probationary period and a criminal record check is required.

Salmo Community Resource Society - Board Members

The Salmo Community Resource Society (SCRS) is looking for one to three (1-3) new Board members. SCRS develops, delivers and maintains a broad range of services that help individuals and families in the Salmo area deal effectively with personal, social and poverty-related issues.

Board members:

  • Oversee the overall operations of the agency; including fiscal and legal responsibilities.
  • Develop policy and strategic direction for the agency.
  • Contribute expertise and serve on committees.
  • Support the Executive Director in carrying out the day-to-day operational responsibilities
  • Advocate for SCRS in the community.
  • Attend meetings.

Skills, experience and assets we look for in new board members include:

  • Experience or knowledge of non-profits
  • A financial background
  • Understanding of policy development
  • A willingness to learn and contribute

References and a criminal record check are required, and orientation is provided. The Board meets nine (9) times a year for 1 ½ to 2 hours on the last Monday of the month from 6:00-8:00 pm at 311 Railway Ave. As a volunteer you will be contributing to the health and wellness of our community; working with an interesting and diverse group of people; developing an understanding of our community’s social issues; guiding the organization towards its future vision; and developing skills in other areas that might benefit you in your career.

Salmo Community Resource Society - Drivers Wanted

The Salmo Community Resource Society (SCRS) has an ongoing need for drivers who have their own car to drive clients to and from appointments. SCRS develops, delivers and maintains a broad range of services that help individuals and families in the Salmo area deal effectively with personal, social and poverty-related issues.

We are looking for volunteers who can:

  • Drive people as directed by the coordinator.
  • Arrive and leave at designated times.
  • Participate in any training that may be offered.
  • Utilize empathic communication skills in an open and genuine manner.
  • Provide a personal driving abstract.
  • Provide proof of insurance and a criminal records check.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.

Volunteers also need to have good communication skills, good driving skills and a vehicle in good working condition. Trips around Salmo or to and from Fruitvale, Trail, Nelson or Castlegar are scheduled anywhere from 0-4 times per week, dependant on need. You will gain the satisfaction of helping people in need, while experiencing the joy of meeting a diverse group of new people and realizing the value of helping community members.

Salmo Valley Public Library - Front Desk Helper, Book Processing/Repair, Outreach

The Salmo Valley Public Library is a vibrant, dynamic and engaging community-gathering place providing Salmo Valley residents with information, education, technology, and support for lifelong learning.

We’re always happy to welcome new volunteers. The majority of our work is done at the Library, with outreach programs done throughout Salmo and Area G. Generally working a 2-3 hour shift each week.

Volunteer duties include:

  • Working at the circulation desk, checking books in and out.
  • Receiving and recording fines; Data entry of patron records.
  • Helping patrons find materials in library referring them to librarian where appropriate; and assisting patrons with photocopying.
  • Shelving returned material.
  • Keeping magazines tidy.
  • Phoning patrons with reserved or overdue books.
  • Checking shelves for overdue materials.
  • On-call to cover regular volunteer shifts

Specialized volunteer jobs:

  • Book processing and/or book repair
  • Books on Wheels program— delivering books for homebound patrons.
  • Mentoring Junior Volunteers age 10-14 (regular shift)

Desirable personal qualities for volunteer work at the library are:

  • People-, service-, and book-oriented with a pleasant attitude, in order to work amicably with staff, other volunteers and public.
  • Well groomed, dependable, tactful and resourceful.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Able to take direction and feedback.
  • Show initiative in completing tasks that need to be done.
  • Alert to and aware of where and when other tasks need doing.

*All volunteers must have a criminal record check done, the cost of which is covered by the library.

Volunteering at the Salmo Library is a great way to connect with the community, continue learning, while at the same time enjoying yourself. You make many new friends and gain a deep feeling of belonging. For those that want to learn more about computers this is a wonderful opportunity to gain new knowledge and strengthen skills. Salmo Valley Seniors ATV Club - New Members

The Salmo Valley Seniors ATV Club is looking for new members and other volunteers for trail brushing. Our mandate is to protect our right to ride. We believe in sharing trails with all, while protecting fellow users and the environment and most of all enjoying the wonderful outdoors in this great province.

Besides trail riding, members help with and participate in organized special events such as a poker ride. Members and volunteers are needed to help with the task of keeping the trails clear by brushing the trails with hand tools. No experience is required, and members and volunteers may offer as much or little time as they have. As a member or volunteer you will gain the satisfaction of helping both seniors and other users as our trails are predominantly for all. Plus, you’ll get plenty of fresh air and exercise while enjoying the beautiful outdoors and great comradery.

Salmo Valley Trail Society - New Members/Helpers

Do you love being outside and contributing to our trail system? The Salmo Valley Trail Society has an ongoing need for member/volunteers to help with Salmo and area trail maintenance, special events and trail layout. No special experience is needed, but familiarity with working with tools is an asset, as is a love of working outdoors. Some training is provided. Membership is by donation.

This summer a few build/trail maintenance days are planned and there are a number of great events planned, including fun runs and bike rides.
